Benzoin, from Siam to Sumatra
Benzoin Sumatra and Benzoin Siam are both types of resin that are commonly used in bukhoor and other aromatic applications. When burnt, they release a distinctive aroma that is slightly different between the two types.
Benzoin is a magical sap or resin that comes from cuts in the trunk of trees that belong to the Styrax family, native to the areas of Java and Sumatra in Indonesia, as well as Thailand. Benzoin is also known as Sambrani or lubān, a generic term for frankincense-type incense.
Benzoin Sumatra has a warm, sweet, and balsamic scent with a slightly vanilla-like undertone. It also has a slightly smoky note to it, which adds depth to the aroma. Overall, Benzoin Sumatra has a rich and complex fragrance that is both comforting and uplifting.
On the other hand, Benzoin Siam has a lighter and more delicate scent compared to Benzoin Sumatra. It has a sweet and resinous aroma that is slightly floral and spicy. When burnt, Benzoin Siam releases a warm and comforting fragrance that is soothing and relaxing.
While we find both Benzoin Sumatra and Benzoin Siam have a sweet and resinous aroma when burnt, the former has a slightly smoky note and a more complex fragrance, while the latter has a more delicate and soothing scent with a touch of spiciness. Which do you prefer?
